Basic vs Flying Hours Salary Split

I having been talking to a few pilots in the last few days and their salary split varied between 50:50 to 75:25 , basic fixed payment against flying hours. What are the pros and cons of each arrangement ? Do you have insurance to cover the flying-hours portion when you are sick (rare I know for such superhumans) for example ?

I suppose a cynical operator would pay the aircrew as small a basic as possible as the revenue received from the customer would be related to flying hours, or at least would exceed any retainer...
