For those operating aircraft with Digital Mapping (DMG) fitted, a question: how often do you actually use it to relate your position ? After all a position, bearing alt and flightplan would suffice, without the full colour background... Do you have to preload mapping regions for unusual destinations or do your rely on a basemap in these scenarios ?

An interesting point to note is the separation between the digital maps background and the obstacle database overlay. In the event that the you are out of map coverage, and must rely on the basemap, the obstacle database may remain covering that area. These can continue be used for navigation fixes and obviously things to avoid at low level...

Is anyone using multiple mapsets for the more obscure regions ? Does you unit merge the maps from different sources ? Do you get involved in any of the map selection and loading ?

I am currently wrestling with a map projection merging problem...

From what I understand, its possible to install mapsets for different scales and even projections for representation usually as orthographical projection of your digital map display. Multiple maps covering the same selected area can either be selected individually or merged using transparency.

There may be map border continuity problems with merged maps which at the very least, reduce clarity.

It obviously depends on your vendor what they are offering, unless you want to generate and specify your own....

Yes all this is possible and done. Maps from various sources can be combined as required. It should be noted that many maps are simply digital representations of existing cartography, with legends and symbols integrated into the map. Additional overlays are then added as required.

I have just spent the last few days in a dark room with no windows, performing robustness tests with a pilot that wants to change scale, switch Nav mode and slew wildly - all at the same time. Just because he can. You guys must have some real fun with your displays and controls...
