I was having a discussion the other day with a pilot colleague concerning the remote airfields his client chose as destinations and wondered what is the most remote location to which you have been directed ? What was it like ? Were the locals welcoming ?

One of the most remote airpots I have been to was an airport in the middle of the sahara desert. It was called TFT and created by an oil company. The construction of the airport required that they moved the sand away and under was a gypsum surface. It was between 800ft drifting sand dunes.
Beautiful flying at sunrise and sunset!!

Did the aircraft require any special filters or mods to cope with possible sand ingress ? I suppose the aircraft will be specified with desert operations in mind...
Moved the sand away , eh ? Not a job for your average bucket and spade...

The aircraft had deflectors that had some affect with keeping sand out of the engines but were primarily designed for ice deflection. Othersise, no real modifications. I did hear of other aircraft that had wheel mods, big tryers that allowed them to land directly on the sand.
I guess the modern day corporate jet has come a long way!
