These surcharges – a result of the ever-increasing cost of oil – will grow by as much as sixty pounds in some cases.
Short-Haul BA Flights
The UK carrier said that, in respect of short-haul flights, the surcharge would be between three pounds and sixteen pounds greater for a single flight (this being doubled for return flights).
Long-Haul BA Flights
On long-haul flights, meanwhile, the increase would be between fifteen and seventy-eight pounds (or, up to 156 pounds return).
Additionally, it said, where flights exceed nine hours, a thirty pound additional charge would be levied.
British Airways added that it also intended to apply comparable increases in foreign markets.
Virgin Atlantic Fuel Surcharges
Earlier this week, Virgin Atlantic also said that it would be imposing higher fuel surcharges. However, it specified that these would affect passengers differently, depending on their location within the aircraft.
Price of Oil
The oil price situation has meant that a number of airlines have had to reduce the number of flights being offered.
Furthermore, several airlines have ceased flying altogether.
Fuel Costs
Recently, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) predicted “grim” prospects for the airline industry, highlighting how spiralling fuel costs in particular would impact negatively on the number of people taking to the skies.
Fuel charges aside, some airlines have taken different approaches in an effort to boost income.
American Airlines Luggage Charge
American Airlines, for example, announced earlier this month that it will impose a $15 charge on the first item of luggage each passenger checks in.
