In the USA, most first officers operate from the left seat. In Europe they usually operate from the right seat. Does the captain have ultimate control during the take-off phase of flight if the F/O is in the left seat?

When is it an acceptable amount of experience to introduce a first officer to the possibilities of command? Should it be on an individual basis or should it be dictated by insurance companies and a total number of hours?

It might become an issue if you are flying an A380 sidestick lefthanded...Airbus is convinced it's not an issue though.

I don't see why the captain shouldn't have full control regardless of the side he sits on. The only item that is sometimes not duplicated is the nosewheel steering tiller.

Are you sure the captain would sit on the right side though?

Often in Corporate aviation, the captain will sit on the right hand seat. The issue of an aborted take off and the captain not having control of the nose wheel steering is the issue at hand.

If the F/O runs off the runway it will be the captains responsibility....
