I had the opportunity to have a play with the Falcon Dassault Easy Cockpit Avionics suite recently , and it looks mighty fine. I particularly liked the terrain display, and use of the trackball cursor for all primary operation. Are the aircraft buyers these days specifying a decent avionics installation, or you flying with the minimal legal equipment fit ?

The keywords in modern avionics are sensor-integration and fusion. The ability to bring together onto a single display, data from many sources and display them meaningfully can greatly improve the pilot's experience. Situational awareness such as terrain displays, digital mapping with obstacle bases with overlaid FMS are good examples of this.

As a lot of this functionality can be integrated into software loads the cost of avionics should be falling, with the use of common display surfaces and control panels.

Cost must also be a major factor, especially if considering retrofit...

It is possible for integration of sensor interfaces or even the sensors themselves from other manufacturers to be integrated in a single avionics unit. Aircraft like Challengers, Gulfstreams and Falcons with their higher price tag, obviously have more of a budget allocation to fund state of the art avionics. The trend now though is for these integrated avionics units to be found in the smaller jets. Some names here are Garmin, Magellen, Honeywell, Universal Avionics.

The prices are coming down and interface standardisation means that the units will contain more functionality at a price point with the additional benefits from data fusion as mentioned earlier providing clearer and more reliable output...
