http://www.airport-int.com/images/industrynews/737%20-%201A.jpgExeter International Airport has announced an ambitious development masterplan to become the south coast's premier airport by 2030.
The airport wants to treble passenger numbers by 2030 to 3.4 million.
Regional & City Airports, the airport's owner, has developed the masterplan in response to the government's 2003 aviation White Paper - which called for regional airports such as Exeter to expand capacity.
The proposals involve an expanded terminal building, featuring new leisure and retail outlets; additional aircraft stands; a new taxiway; an expansion of aircraft maintenance facilities; a 100,00sq ft training academy; a new 130-bed hotel south of the airport; and new road infrastructure.
The airport says that if the plans are approved over 2,000 jobs will be created and the airport's contribution to the local economy will increase to £264 million.
Flybe Flights
Exeter Airport was purchased by Regional & City Airports, the airport development and management arm of construction company Balfour Beatty, in a £60 million deal from Devon County Council in January 2007.
The development masterplan builds on the investment that has already taken place, including the new hangar dedicated to the airline Flybe (which is headquartered at Exeter), which has significantly expanded its flight operations in recent years.
Airport officials also aim to attract businesses to Devon County Council's nearby Skypark development, a new out-of-town development featuring leisure and retail oulets, public parkland and the local football team's proposed new ground.
The draft masterplan is currently the subject of a three-month consultation, which will close at the end of September.
The airport hopes to submit a planning application later this year.
Bournemouth Airport Expansion
Meanwhile, along the UK's south coast, another regional airport with ambitious growth plans has announced a further injection of investment.
Bournemouth Airport has reportedly received an additional £13 million from its parent company, the Manchester Airports Group (MAG), to begin construction of a new terminal building.
Major low-cost and mainline airlines such as Ryanair, Easyjet, WizzAir, First Choice, Thomas Cook and Thomsonfly have all expanded operations at the airport in recent times - and earlier this year the airport received planning permission for a newly expanded £45 million terminal building to cope with the increase in passengers expected in coming years.
Peter Duffy, the airport's managing director, told the Dorset Echo that the extra cash boost from MAG would enable the airport to fast-track the terminal building for completion by spring 2010.
